What this is

This page asks the Bureau of Meteorology's Water Data Online service for every monitoring point that reports a Storage Volume, takes the most recent daily reading from each, and adds them together. A scheduled job refreshes the underlying data automatically; this page just displays the latest result.

Deduplication

Some storages are monitored by more than one gauge or logger and would otherwise be counted twice. Stations are merged first by matching their base station number (stripping variant suffixes like .1/.3), then by a short list of manually verified cases where the same storage carries genuinely different station numbers. See the "ⓘ dedup details" toggle on the Overview tab for the current run's specifics.

Coverage

Data is supplied to the Bureau by state and territory water agencies under the Water Regulations 2008. Coverage is not complete — this total reflects what those agencies publish through this service, not the volume of every dam in Australia.

Location data

Coordinates come from the Bureau's station metadata. A small number of known errors (sign flips, and a couple of genuinely incorrect source coordinates) are corrected before display; state/territory is inferred from coordinates using an approximation of real borders, which may occasionally misclassify a station sitting very close to a border.
